Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality
General Scheme of the Criminal Justice (Victims of Crime) (Amendment) Bill 2018: Discussion
Mr. Robert Purcell:
I will use an example to illustrate the point. Let us say, for example, that a person's sexual history is to be brought up during the course of a trial. The defence will notify the prosecution which will then notify the Legal Aid Board which will brief a solicitor and a counsel who will attend with the victim or complainant and advise him or her in that regard. If the court allows the cross-examination to take place, the counsel and the solicitor will remain in court and be part of the proceedings at that time.
