Joint Oireachtas Committee on Communications, Climate Action and Environment
Session 1: The Evidence
Mr. Amrin Amin:
The key issue is they have community standards to appear to be helpful but in fact there is inaction. This is evident in various incidents we have seen around the world, for example, in what happened in Sri Lanka where there was a refusal to take down a post that could clearly qualify as hate speech and a refusal to fact-check political advertisements. There is clearly a profit motive. They like to have community standards to give a veneer of co-operation and certain code words that appear to be helpful, but in fact the underlying purpose is the insatiable thirst for profits. Is that right?
