Joint Oireachtas Committee On Key Issues Affecting The Traveller Community
Traveller Health: Discussion (Resumed)
Ms Siobhán McArdle:
I would hate to think there is prejudice, but I would be realistic in saying that if people who use our health services tell us they feel they face barriers and prejudice, then it is there. At a local level, if that comes back to a public health nurse or people say it is there, there are good local working relationships and generally people will share that experience and it can be addressed at a local level. The training programmes are the key, both in educating our healthcare professionals and in maintaining and ensuring that people are regularly getting cultural awareness training. In terms of data around specific incidence of prejudice, I do not have that data. It is certainly something we can look at.
