Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government

General Scheme of the Land Development Agency Bill 2019: Department of Housing, Planning and Local Government and Land Development Agency

Mr. John Coleman:

Permanent affordability is an issue we are discussing with the local authority in Dún Laoghaire. The local authority members are asking how they can know that there will be permanent affordability. It is important to emphasise that we all want the same thing. As we told them, we are equally anxious to ensure the homes we provide are permanently affordable. Our interests are aligned; we are as one on this issue and will come up with appropriate structures to ensure that objective is achieved.

The Senator's point about dealings with third parties and the collapse of some contracting firms is apt. That is not a situation in which we want to find ourselves. Our intention is to devise our own internal processes in order that we can mitigate that risk in so far as is possible.
