Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality

Garda Reform and Related Issues: Discussion

Mr. Drew Harris:

There is a law enforcement directive we can deploy, but it will have to wait until Brexit happens. We are still operating within the EU regulations. Regardless of what type of Brexit takes place, we will need new arrangements. The law enforcement directive assists in that regard because the United Kingdom will, in effect, become a third country for the purpose of GDPR regulations, but it still allows police-police co-operation and the exchange of information which is essential on a North-South and an east-west basis, particularly to the National Crime Agency.
