Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality

Garda Reform and Related Issues: Discussion

Mr. Drew Harris:

Some stations may no longer have a chief superintendent. In fact, there will be eight fewer chief superintendents engaged in divisional policing. What I point to, however, is that superintendents will be dispersed throughout the divisions. Where we are taking out a superintendent, the post will be replaced by an inspector post. There will be additional inspectors and sergeants to ensure the community will know that there will be somebody to whom they can go and in whom they can put their trust in terms of delivery. What has been fed back to the management structure is that the relationship with the chief superintendent is very important. However, people also want to see the presence of a blue shirt on the ground. They want to be able to build a longer term relationship with a sergeant or inspector. That is very effective.
