Bird Population in Ireland: BirdWatch Ireland

Ms Oonagh Duggan:

The Natura 2000 network has been mapped. The natural heritage areas have also been mapped but suffer from a lack of sufficient protection. Local authorities in some counties have undertaken mapping of wetlands. Some ecosystem services mapping has been carried out by the National Parks and Wildlife Service. A national habitat map was on the cards for a while but I am not sure where that stands. That would be an important feature. That information could be overlaid to show what the gaps and what else we need to do, but I am not totally involved in that area.
