Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality
Direct Provision and the International Protection Application Process: Discussion (Resumed)
Ms Oonagh Buckley:
We do not have a written statement. As civil servants, we are required to achieve value for money in the use of taxpayers' money. As one of the other members of the committee pointed out, that means we have been paying approximately €35 per head to the providers. That cost is going to increase because, as we go through the existing procurement process - I must speak without revealing any commercial secrets - to meet the higher standards, there will be a higher level of cost per person per night for people in the new model of direct provision centre. That is the right thing to do because those are the standards we must meet.
