Joint Oireachtas Committee on Children and Youth Affairs

Recruitment and Retention of Social Workers: Discussion (Resumed)

Mr. Eamonn Donnelly:

They want to advocate on behalf of the disadvantaged in society. In their younger years they sometimes come in with an expectation that they will be able to make a difference straight away but they get choked in regulation. It can seem as if the roof is falling in because of the pressures and it drives them away from the profession. When we educate people to be social workers it needs to be a clear part of the education curriculum that this is a tough station and that it is not just about doing well for the community. I do not mean to be flippant about that. It is very important.
