Joint Oireachtas Committee on Children and Youth Affairs

Recruitment and Retention of Social Workers: Discussion (Resumed)

Mr. Bernard Cantillon:

The only concern I would have is that if colleagues are brought through some sort of training scheme that they are qualified to the same level of expectation as those of us who are already in the profession. We do not want to create a type of social worker who is less qualified or a situation where there would be a type of social worker who is a child protection social worker but is not qualified to work as a social worker. There is a particular level of expertise and training which goes in to creating a social worker. We do not want to create a separate type of social worker who is not at the level to which the rest of us are trained.
