I genuinely recognise that it is a very stressful time for families, that they have been waiting more than patiently in very difficult circumstances and that they are worried about their children in the context of the availability of this drug. It is also important to recognise that the HSE has the statutory power to make such decisions. Neither I nor the Deputy has that power. It is very clear that under the Health Pricing Act responsibility lies with the HSE.

I am also conscious of the fact that it takes two sides to negotiate an agreement. The HSE has been working to try to secure a good agreement, but I am very clear that we need to make the drug available. The HSE is aware of my views on the matter. While being very respectful of the processes that are being and have to be gone through, I am very clear that the drug needs to made available. I ask the director general to comment on the specifics.
