Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality

Implementation of the General Data Protection Regulation: Data Protection Commission

Mr. Cathal Ryan:

No. One was actually a Bill that was almost piggy-backing on a Private Members' Bill. Sometimes the Bill may not go through pre-legislative scrutiny so it is really determined by that. I have absolutely no problem sharing our observations on legislation that is going to see the light of day or which will come to this committee. It would be a matter of engaging with us to figure out the appropriate timing for that. I do not see anything preventing us from doing that, as long as all parties are aware that we may publish. Not everything will be published. Sometimes we come back with nil observations because we simply had no observations to give. When, however, there are important data protection implications to legislation then I am very happy to do it, if we can do it. I am surprised that the committee does not get sight of our views on the legislation.
