Broadband Service Provision: Discussion (Resumed)

9:00 am

Mr. Mark Griffin:

No, it will be a very small entity. One wants a dedicated team of people whose sole job is management of the national broadband plan, the metropolitan area networks, the emergency call answer centre, and the Galway-Mayo duct that we run as well. There also is a lot of telecoms infrastructure in other bodies like the OPW, for example, where, for the purpose of maximising the value to the State, one would look to bundling that in under one agency. This would be a small and tight group of people but with all of the skills and the capacity to face off commercial entities, and that can spend money in buying in the best and brightest. We need to be in a position in the State to ensure that the people who are managing the contract have the necessary skills and it will be a full-time job for them.
