Joint Standing Committee on the Irish Language, the Gaeltacht and the Islands
Seirbhísí trí Ghaeilge (Atógáil): An Roinn Talmhaíochta, Bia agus Mara
Mr. Padraig McMahon:
It is not money or numbers. It is having people who can carry out the job through Irish. As we heard earlier, this is a problem when we are trying to attract skilled people, particularly people like inspectors who will be out on farms.
We are not aware of huge numbers of people not being able to get service through Irish. We have acknowledged that this is something that we have to look at. Purely because we are not getting the complaints does not mean the people are not out there. The point was well made by some of the Senator's colleagues earlier that people are not expecting Irish so they use English. We cannot disagree with that and we will have to look into it to see what we can do about it.
