Joint Standing Committee on the Irish Language, the Gaeltacht and the Islands

Seirbhísí trí Ghaeilge (Atógáil): An Roinn Talmhaíochta, Bia agus Mara

Ms Eilís O'Connell:

The OneLearning courses are aligned to Gaelchultúr and are available to Civil Service staff. One example I have here relates to intermediate level which is aligned to Gaelchultúr level 3 or 4. It is recommended for staff who can already communicate at a basic level in the Irish language and who wish to acquire greater proficiency. The duration of the course given to them is 30 hours, which one session per week over ten or 20 weeks. Entry to the course is subject to a language proficiency assessment provided by Gaelchultúr. The goal of the course is to develop participants' spoken and written abilities by improving their vocabulary and confidence to communicate and to provide a service through Irish. The learning objectives are that they would be able to converse confidently and reply to spoken enquiries in line with the level 3-level 4 certificate in professional Irish on the national framework of qualifications, NFQ, awarded by Gaelchultúr. The courses people are offered are aligned to that. We have an individual who is undertaking a Teastas Eorpach na Gaeilge, level 2 course in Irish, who is based in the fishery harbour centre sa Daingean.
