Reform of Family Law System: Discussion (Resumed)
Ms Eilis Barry:
Family law mediation is available but there is no information service available in the area of family law. It should be the Legal Aid Board which does this. There should be a more holistic version of legal aid. Ms Lord spoke of the unbundling of legal aid services. In other jurisdictions, there are places where litigants can go. They may be representing themselves but they can receive advice on how they fill in the form or what will actually happen in the court. Phrases such as call-overs or putting it to second call are very obvious to the people who appear in the courts but they mean nothing to the person coming in trying to negotiate the system.
