Governance and Child Safeguarding Issues in Scouting Ireland: Tusla and Scouting Ireland

Mr. Pat Smyth:

Scouting Ireland's governance is not something under question here. It would be wrong to say that Scouting Ireland should not be able to determine who is appointed to positions. Were any organisation to reach that stage, things would be at a very challenging point. That is not what is on the table here. Scouting Ireland has been open, and I expect it will continue to be very open, with Tusla in going forward with this. It is Scouting Ireland's responsibility to assess the right person to appoint to any of these roles. Meeting the standards required should be transparent and obvious when someone is in a role over a period. I would never ask that the organisation would not be responsible for appointing its own people to those roles.
