Joint Standing Committee on the Irish Language, the Gaeltacht and the Islands

Seirbhísí trí Ghaeilge (Atógáil): Feidhmeannacht na Seirbhíse Sláinte

Mr. Paul Connors:

I accept that, but the Chair will accept that if we do not do this in a co-ordinated way, taking in HBS, recruitment and everything else we have mentioned, this will end up in an ad hocsystem, for which the Chair will not thank me in a year's time. That will happen if we do this in an unstructured way. That is why the research was done. I could have asked Mr. Ó Coileáin or Ms Uí Theighneáin what they thought, but we need to ask the people to make them feel that this is their strategy as well. It is important that we do that research and that we can stand over it.

With regard to the deadline for the next part of the research, I will not give the Chair a deadline, even though she has asked for one. I hope she will excuse me for that. We need to consider that as part of the implementation plan. I keep raising the point that the gap is a very important part of this. We would like to see the research towards the year's end.

Under the new system for the Irish language officers, the roles have certainly changed. We have job descriptions for each of the Irish language officers. They probably did not exist, if I am correct-----
