Joint Standing Committee on the Irish Language, the Gaeltacht and the Islands

Seirbhísí trí Ghaeilge (Atógáil): Feidhmeannacht na Seirbhíse Sláinte

Mr. Paul Connors:

The point just made by Mr. Mac Aodha Bhuí is a point I was going to make, which is that we need to get right the Gaeltacht areas where the bigger populations are. When we sat down with this strategy two years ago, one of the points we made was that there are other smaller pockets, particularly with Gaelscoileanna, where there is a population that is increasing. There are pockets of Irish-speakers close to where I live in Dublin, for example. In the first instance, with the resources that we have - we have to be very conscious of these resources and as we said in our opening statement we acknowledge that our resources are finite or limited - what we are trying to do is to develop our services where those bigger populations are and get that right. This strategy is designed to deal with the Gaeltacht areas. When we have that dealt with, we start to look at those other areas where the smaller numbers are.
