Joint Standing Committee on the Irish Language, the Gaeltacht and the Islands

Seirbhísí trí Ghaeilge (Atógáil): Feidhmeannacht na Seirbhíse Sláinte

Mr. Paul Connors:

I have no doubt but that we will. To answer the question specifically, we need to identify the gaps and to have a funding stream to fill those gaps with people, resources and services. Most of those services involve people. We also need to prioritise those needs. The survey we conducted as part of the strategy shows that GP services are the primary concern and demand of the Irish-speaking population. As the committee will know, we are already involved with the GPs, the Irish Medical Organisation, IMO, and the National Association of General Practitioners, NAGP, as part of the GP contract negotiations. That will form part of the discussion in that regard. We will also work with the Irish College of General Practitioners to get it to understand and to work with us to persuade and coax GPs into working in Gaeltacht areas, which is a real challenge as I am sure the committee is aware.
