International Protection (Family Reunification) (Amendment) Bill 2017: Discussion

Ms Fiona Finn:

I would like to make a small point on the money message. We can really forensically look at the cost and whether an additional cost arises. Some 908 applications were received for the first round of IHAP alone. Such numbers have never been received for a family reunification process in a normal year, even under the 1996 Act. I cannot see where the additional cost would come from. There are enough resources to deal with 908 applications, which is an extraordinarily high number. The number we are looking at in the context of family reunification is between 300 and 400, which is significantly less.
