Select Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government
Local Government Bill 2018: Committee Stage
6:00 pm
John Paul Phelan (Carlow-Kilkenny, Fine Gael) | Oireachtas source
I understand. I come from a little place with a population of 2,000 people on the Wexford-Kilkenny border called Tullogher Rosbercon, and the commission decided to separate Rosbercon from Tullogher. How it came about I do not know; it has never happened before. My own neighbours are contacting me continuously. The Deputy is correct that I am the person who will sign the statutory instruments. I could decide not to sign them but we must remember that there are local elections in the near future. People are deciding to run and are making decisions about it. It would be completely inappropriate for me, as a Minister of State, if I did not implement this change.
I misunderstood what the Deputy was saying at first. The matter can be raised in the Dáil in Private Members' time, and I suggest, because it is an issue in the Deputy's part of the world, that that might be the place to have the discussion.
