Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health

Lyme Disease: Discussion

9:00 am

Professor Karina Butler:

Yes. We have experience of patients coming back to us who have gone abroad. We do not want to be specific because we do not want patients to be identifiable. Some undergo coagulation tests on a daily basis and in certain centres receive type IV antibiotics, all at huge cost and with no proven benefit. They often come home with an array of nutritional and other supplements and receive other therapies for which there is no evidence base.
