Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action

Third Report of the Citizens' Assembly: Discussion (Resumed)

2:00 pm

Professor Valérie Masson-Delmotte:

Oil is still used. There is a continuous decline. What is challenging in the context of transport is full decarbonisation, which is why there are negative emissions in many pathways so there are options to take CO2 from the atmosphere and store it durably. Some aspects of transport are very hard to decarbonise - not only maritime transport but airline transportation. There are multiple options. My view is that the pledges from the international aviation and maritime sectors are not on track with the well below 2o Celsius pathway.
