Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government

Impact of Brexit on Ireland's Housing Market: Discussion (Resumed)

11:00 am

Ms Sarah Neary:

None of them has been but progress is good. They are going through the accreditation process at the moment. I know where Deputy Casey is going; he is wondering what will happen in the event of a hard Brexit at the end of March. That is something we are putting to the Commission in terms of a transition arrangement, separate from the withdrawal agreement. There is a precedent for this in that when the construction products directive, CPD, became a regulation in 2013, there was a similar cut-off point, and, from 1 July 2013, a new set of rules was put in place for construction products. At that time the Commission specified that if one's product did not change and the standards relating to it did not change, then one could continue to put that product on the market up until the time of one's next audit or next batch of the product. We are inquiring of the Commission at the moment as to what kind of transition arrangement may apply in the event of a hard Brexit.
