Public Accounts Committee

Matters related to Medical Negligence, Open Disclosure, Cervical Cancer and Thalidomide Litigation

9:00 am

Mr. Ciarán Breen:

We do that because when we get in a claim, and as the claim begins to go through its life cycle, when we begin to know more about it and get more medical evidence about it, one of our skills, which I hope we have, is that we are able to put a value on the case and say that in our view the damages in the case are going to cost "X" amount. Then we will say that costs will be plus "Y". The estimated liability, therefore, is the "X" and "Y" multiplied by the number of cases we believe will settle within that range.
