As Chairman of the Committee of Public Accounts, I find it extraordinary that, several hours into a meeting specifically called to deal with housing, and having asked a straightforward question about how much the Department spent on house construction last year, there is no answer forthcoming. Do the officials not see how that makes people query the Department's commitment to solving the problem? If they do not know what they are spending and they do not know the figures for children leaving homelessness - I am afraid the longer I go on, the more I discover that the officials do not know what is happening.
