Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills

Effectiveness and Timeliness of Consent Classes provided in Third-Level Institutions: Discussion

3:30 pm

Ms Síona Cahill:

I will answer the last question asked by the Chairman about where and how we make this happen. We need to have a conversation about such education being tied to the compacts. I do not have a position on it, but I do think we need to have that conversation quickly. We need more data because people are asking questions about what happens in institutions. That is why we would like to rerun the Say Something survey we carried out in 2014. We need to move away from consent classes being the point at which we talk about consent, education and respect across all levels of education and society.

I thank committee members for their time.
