Scoping Inquiry into the CervicalCheck Screening Programme: Discussion
9:00 am
Dr. Gabriel Scally:
Yes. In the appendix to the report, we have provided whatever details we can regarding the data from the laboratories. Deputy O'Reilly is quite right when she says that an average is only an average. Some 50% of laboratories will be above average and some 50% of them will be below average. It is a question of ascertaining the position in respect of the slides. One of the good things about contracting is that some of the quality standards that are demanded in Irish contracts are higher than the US standards. For example, there is a limit on the number of slides that screeners can look at. During her visits, Dr. Denton has been looking at the screener records to ensure they are accurate. We are very reliant on the information we are able to attain. As Dr. Denton has said, a couple of laboratories are gone.
