Priorities for Budget 2019: Irish Fiscal Advisory Council

2:00 pm

Mr. Seamus Coffey:

As mentioned previously, we are looking at €3.5 billion of additional space for spending for 2019. Priorities can be assessed on that and if that €3.5 billion, which we feel is in line with prudent economic and budgetary management, is not sufficient, then additional revenue raising measures can be introduced. If the €3.5 billion is adhered to, we hope that would lead to a budget surplus in 2019. If that is not sufficient, additional revenue measures can be introduced to maintain that hope, and I think that we should go beyond that hope, to having a budget surplus to have additional resources for health, housing and other areas and have the appropriate fiscal policy.
