Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health

Hospital Services: Discussion (Resumed)

9:00 am

Ms Phil Ní Sheaghdha:

The hours in Ireland are longer. Nurses in Ireland work a 39-hour week. In all of the countries with which we compared nurses work 37 hours apart from the UK where they work 37.5 hours. Deputy O'Reilly is correct that the hourly rate is less if one is looking at purchasing power parity. In other words, we have to work longer to get the income.
