Joint Oireachtas Committee on Communications, Climate Action and Environment

Scrutiny of Petroleum and Other Mineral Development (Amendment) (Climate Emergency Measures) Bill 2018: Discussion

3:00 pm

Dr. Neil Walker:

I would just like to clarify one point. With regard to the LNG terminal envisaged on the Shannon and in Cork Harbour, liquified natural gas would be imported and evaporated. There is no proposal whatsoever to produce liquified natural gas for export. That is a totally different technology. One has to be somewhere like Abu Dhabi, Qatar or Texas - in other words, a major surplus producer with no local markets in order to make LNG. I just wanted to clarify that.
