There is a difference between a job description and a contract of employment. Obviously a job description informs a prospective employee of what the job will be like. I would have thought that on the day an employee starts they should be handed their contract of employment. That would be a reasonable halfway house between what Deputy Brady is saying and what the Minister is proposing. In my experience it is not out of the ordinary to be handed a contract on the day an employee starts. It is quite normal for an employee to be shown where to sit and given their contract. If that is normal, why does it not apply in law? I propose the halfway house of requiring it on the day an employee starts.
