It looks at the whole screening pathway of the operation of the programme; smear-taking, cytology, the smear test, the laboratory analysis, the colposcopy and histology. An interval cancer case is one where it has been recommended for a woman to come back in three years and the cancer is diagnosed in that interval. An interval cancer triggers an automatic cytology review.
