Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills

Review of Relationships and Sexuality Education: Discussion

3:30 pm

Ms Anna Keogh:

We were asked about how outside facilitators are regulated. There is postgraduate education. I did my masters in sexuality studies and focused on sex education in secondary schools. I attended training with the Irish Family Planning Association and Foróige. There are many training programmes which can help someone to become a relationship and sexuality educator. This year, DCU has been commissioned a postgraduate programme on sexual health and sex education and it has a module which focuses on intellectual disabilities. It is coming along. There are education certificates we can get. As to regulation of outside facilitators per se, we need to trust the schools that they can regulate who they let in. There are outside speakers for other subjects also. One would not let someone come in and say something that is completely wrong about history. In the same way, one would not let them come in and say something non-factual about sexuality.
