Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality

Garda Oversight and Accountability: Discussion

9:00 am

Mr. Michael Finn:

I do not think we had that many cases appealed. It was more in the low thousands. I am confident but I am just trying to recall from my time there. I think we had something like 2,000 appeals before the courts before Christmas. Some probably adjourned into April but most of the appeals, from my recollection, should have gone through the courts at this stage. They are all the people we could contact and who were willing to go through the process with us. We wrote to everybody and tried to engage with everybody but not everybody came back to us. There were people we were not able to contact.
