Overview of Operations of the National Lottery: Discussion

1:30 pm

Ms Carol Boate:

If they were masquerading as being the lottery, I would certainly have a concern. I do have responsibility for enforcing trademarks, and I think every day about the integrity of the brand of the national lottery and how to ensure its long-term sustainability into the future. People play the national lottery out of trust as well. They play it for fun, for the dream of winning, and they trust, when they buy that little slip of paper, that it has gone into a draw that is correctly supervised, monitored and regulated, and that, if they win, they will be advised of it. Anything that would threaten the brand of the national lottery would concern me.

It is not clear what the scale of each of these operations is. What is clear is the number of them is growing and it may continue to grow. I would not be so worried about the scale as much as if they represent any threat to the brand of the national lottery.
