Joint Oireachtas Committee on Future of Mental Health Care

Mental Health Services: Discussion (Resumed)

1:30 pm

Mr. Michael Walsh:

No, we have experience of it year-in, year-out. The consultant is entitled to holidays and leaves the service for a period of eight weeks a year or whatever it is. During that period, we do not have a clinical lead. We are not able to see new patients and we are not able to even look at referrals from general practitioners, GPs, in that time because we would be clinically responsible for them. We do not see anything in that time. If a consultant plans to leave and has advised that he or she will leave in two months or whatever, the turnaround for a consultant to be re-employed is a year.
