Broadly speaking, local government is funded on a one-third each basis through rates, other local charges and central Government funding. In terms of funding coming from the centre, the most significant elements are the LPT allocations to local authorities which amount to approximately €500 million and the roads funding that comes from the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport.
