Garda Homicide Statistics: Discussion (Resumed)

9:00 am

Ms Lois West:

It is possible. It would be completely unrealistic to say An Garda Síochána could prevent every incident from happening, even if it were in possession of a perfect dataset. However, as people who deal with data, we know the importance of good data in terms of being able to reach good and satisfactory conclusions. It is critical that the data are sufficiently robust and accurate for us to have a chance to track an escalation of incidence. As Ms Galligan stated, Operation Devise was set up within the national protective services bureau, which is very enthusiastic to be referred cases where concern is raised. My concern is that that is currently being done in an ad hocand piecemeal way and there are limiting factors to what we can do because of PULSE.
