Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government

Reclassification of Approved Housing Bodies: Discussion

9:30 am

Mr. Kieron Brennan:

Most of our new builds have been done in co-operation with local authorities and have, in many cases, been on local authority land. We acknowledge that and are grateful for it. Our build programme will grind to a halt early next year, however, because we do not have further land to move onto. In order to plan a project for 2019, one needs to begin in 2017. In a way, we are falling off a cliff in this area.

The Senator is correct in so far as a lot of land has been identified as potentially available but there appears not to be a proactive land management policy in place. There is a need for this and something needs to happen to link the two things together. Speed is an issue and we need to make some changes fairly quickly.
