Joint Standing Committee on the Irish Language, the Gaeltacht and the Islands

Mr. Peter Finnegan:

Yes. The three includes one person at assistant principal level who is a former Raidió na Gaeltachta journalist and who has very good Irish. In terms of the output from that unit, the target for press releases under the official language scheme was 5% and when we checked back on it, the output was actually 7.5%. We are doing a considerable amount, although we will seek to improve that further in the new language scheme. It is something on which we are doing reasonably well relative to other organisations.

On the legislation issue, first of all, it is a legacy issue. One of the reasons the problem arose was that in the 1990s the emphasis was very much on quality, which was absolutely right, but the resources were not there to keep up with the output. As a result the section fell far behind in terms of its level of output. In recent years we have increased the staffing of Rannóg an Aistriúcháin from 17 to 23. Being realistic and given the increase in the usage of the Irish language and the legislative output of the Houses, we are going to have to put in significantly more resources. I am conscious that we have a statutory obligation which we must meet.
