Joint Oireachtas Committee on Children and Youth Affairs

Annual Report of Ombudsman for Children 2016: Discussion

1:30 pm

Dr. Niall Muldoon:

We finish a lot of cases within six weeks. Once we contact an organisation, it tends to look after a case better because it knows we are on the pitch. The Molly case is a good example. It took a number of years but we were breaking new ground and each organisation had to be persuaded to move in that direction. That is an unusual one. We knew that by taking that one case, we would change a whole system. In individual cases, we can try to move as quickly as possible for the child involved. Our raison d'êtreis to get in and out as quickly as possible so that a child gets what he or she needs.
