I saw a film that fundamentally changed how I think about this subject. It is a film from the 1980s called "Whose Life is It Anyway?" and it is quite amazing. It changed my perspective on this issue. Is there not a kind of de factodignity in dying where somebody approaching the end of his or her life in a general hospital is prescribed morphine? Doctors know in such a case that somebody is coming to the end and will administer an amount of morphine that will, if not quite kill the patient, then certainly lead them to die in a certain way.
