Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Eighth Amendment of the Constitution

Eighth Amendment of the Constitution: Constitutional Issues Arising from the Citizens Assembly Recommendations

1:30 pm

Professor William Binchy:

Of the nature of things, of course there are the inherent differences that exist. It is correct to say that if one finishes the sentence, bodily integrity is crucially important. Unless one is dodging and weaving, the relevant part of the right to choose in those circumstances means the right to take the life of the unborn child. That is what it is about. If we are talking about medical care outside that context, we are in entire agreement. However, if the proposal is that the right to choose is the right to take the life of the unborn child, it is a proposition that needs justification.
