Seanad Public Consultation Committee

Children's Mental Health Services: Discussion

10:00 am

Dr. Elisabetta Petitbon:

Senator Kelleher mentioned my presentation.

It was about being more on the side of going for the medical model, which is actually a trend that is quite provable lately in Europe, and going towards using talk therapy. In fact, our clients ask for it. In particular, when working with children we cannot not use such therapies. There are alternatives such as art therapy or pet therapy which are completely non-existent here in Ireland. To answer Senator Kelleher's question, when she asks what one thing should be reported in the document, I would say that if psychiatrists feel that they are not being heard by the State, and psychologists less so, psychotherapists feel they are completely non-existent. Therefore, please include our voice.
