Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills

Engagement with Caranua

Mr. David O'Callaghan:

I believe Deputy Connolly is also interested in the question. We got some criticism from the Comptroller and Auditor General that we were not doing enough checking of applications and that we were not going out to suppliers to confirm that works had been done. Under the Data Protection Act and our own Act the feeling was that we had to preserve the confidentiality of our survivors at all costs. However, we had to develop some mechanism to check on whether works were done or else we would be in default with the Comptroller and Auditor General. We got legal advice on how we could do this and we now have a formula, which I will present to the first meeting of the new board, hopefully on 21 June. We have a formula for investigating whether works were done or not. That is the situation regarding confidentiality.
