Sustaining Viable Rural Communities: Discussion (Resumed)

2:10 pm

Mr. Paul Hogan:

To unpack it a bit more, we are talking about proportionate growth. In other words, unless a place is specifically designated for growth, it should not just happen that it would grow tenfold in the course of a few years. For example, Ratoath, County Meath had a population of less than 1,000 20 years ago, but the settlement now has a population of 10,000. Obviously, all of the services required for that community have had to catch up with its development. In many instances, people will then go through much of their lives before the things they would expect to have are provided.
