General Scheme of Road Traffic (Fixed Penalty - Drink Driving) Bill 2017: Discussion (Resumed)

Given the figures cited by Deputy Fitzpatrick, the legislation would save lives. Surely the witnesses should welcome that and pursue some of the avenues that the Chairman outlined. I was a transport spokesperson for a long time and dealt with the development of community-based rural transport. I remember OK Transport in Offaly and Kildare. I know the Beara Peninsula and south-west Cork very well, where it can be difficult for people to socialise. On the face of it, though, and given these statistics, surely the legislation should be welcomed and we should then move on to dealing with speeding.
