Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport

Road Safety Strategy: Discussion (Resumed)

9:00 am

Ms Verona Murphy:

Not so much alco-locks. Some of our members conduct random testing or all testing, especially on drivers who have spent the weekend on their premises or whatever before going to work on a Monday morning. The reason alco-locks can never be a mandatory application is as follows. My drivers can be in Italy on a Monday morning and, therefore, I would unable to tell whether they have been drinking. I cannot be entirely responsible in that regard and I do not think any employer can be. What if people, like these chaps in front of me, got into a tractor but had a few scoops the night before? Who will say whether that man is fit to drive? One could test them.
